Shelter Share’s Mobile Application
Mobile resource that helps users locate nearby shelters during natural disasters. Similar to Airbnb, users can search for available shelters based on location, capacity, amenities, and requirements. Shelter owners can create a profile and list available shelter space for rent. The app includes a map feature for easy navigation and a rating system for safety and reliability.
"Shelter Share" also serves as a community-building platform during natural disasters, allowing users to connect, share information, and offer support.
How does it Work?
After initially creating your profile, browse nearby shelters, and submit a reservation for the shelter you feel would help best. It will be reviewed by the Shelter Owner, and then immediately notify you once approved. This way you’re able to have something in place on days the weather is going to be extreme, as well as peace of mind. It’s better to having a backup plan, then no plan at all.

At Shelter Share, we understand the unpredictability of severe weather. Our founder experienced a close call with a tornado in 2015 and decided that no one should have to face the fear and uncertainty that comes with not having a safe place to go during a storm. Oklahoma has had over 800 tornadoes, and yet Oklahoma City has only 26 shelters per 1500 residents, with no public shelters available.
We believe everyone deserves access to a secure storm shelter, regardless of where they live. That's why we created Shelter Share, an online platform that connects people in need of a storm shelter with hosts who have available space. For less than $9 a month, our members receive:
- A physical emergency toolkit
- Access to a safe and secure shelter through our app
- Background-checked hosts for peace of mind
- Post-storm resources, including shower locations, laundry facilities, and charging stations.
- A supportive community of like-minded individuals

Safety is a priority for us to protect those who use Shelter Share. We verify the shelter owner, as well as require a State Issued ID for all users, to promote safety. If you’re a shelter owner, we will contact you to ensure you’re able to help us protect our communities.
As a general rule, it is recommended that users book a storm shelter as soon as they know they will need it, especially during times of severe weather when demand is high. This can help ensure that a shelter will be available and ready for use when it is needed. However, some shelter hosts may have more flexibility with their availability and may be able to accommodate last-minute bookings. It is important to communicate with the host as soon as possible and ask about their specific notice requirements to ensure a smooth booking process. Overall, we encourage our users to be proactive in booking storm shelters and to communicate with their hosts to ensure a safe and secure sheltering experience.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the safest place to be during a tornado is in a designated storm shelter or safe room. If you do not have access to a storm shelter, you should seek shelter in a small, windowless interior room on the lowest level of a sturdy building.
You may want to use Shelter Share if you live in an area prone to severe weather, such as tornadoes or hurricanes, and do not have access to a storm shelter or safe room. Shelter Share provides a platform for individuals to connect with shelter hosts who have available spaces in their storm shelters. This can be especially helpful if you do not have a storm shelter of your own or if your shelter is not sufficient to protect you and your family during a severe weather event. Additionally, Shelter Share can be used if you are traveling to an area that is prone to severe weather and want to ensure that you have access to a safe place to shelter during a storm.
